Red Apple Lipstick Lip Liner (Natural) Review

Today I have a review of the Lip Liner in Natural from Red Apple Lipstick that came in my February Petit Vour subscription box. [info in italics taken from Petit Vour]

WHAT IT IS:
A gluten-free lip liner that is allergen-free. Use under lipstick to define your lips and prevent feathering or fading, or use alone for a matte pout. 

HOW TO USE:
Apply Red Apple Lipstick Lip Liner along natural edge of lips and then fill in outline for a solid base. Apply Red Apple Lipstick over top and then blot color gently with a tissue to remove any excess. Voila! Perfectly rouged, stay-all-day lip color!

The Lip Liners are available in six different shades: Almost Red: brown-based deep red, Barely Pink: natural, warm pink , Blush: orange-based nude rose, Dusty Rose: just that with a hint of mauve, Natural: a little pink, a little brown, the perfect color for a defined pout, and Roseberry: rich rose color with a bold berry base.

I received the shade Natural, and it works with so many lipsticks in my collection! It is a surprisingly smoothly applying lip liner pencil with a matte finish. I’ve worn it alone, as well as with various lipsticks in my collection. It really helps keep lipsticks to stay all day without getting that dried out crumbly feeling.

Taming my Hair with the Conair Straightening Brush

Today I have a review of the new Straightening Brush from Conair Canada that was sent to me via the lovely folks at Brill Communications (Thank You!).

 

 

The Conair Straightening Brush is a heated paddle brush with ceramic technology – which is supposed to reduce damage and increase shine, and is said to be capable of smoothing and straightening in one pass. It heats up really quickly (to 375 F / 190 C) and is fairly easy to use. The paddle brush has both nylon and ceramic coated bristles.

 

 

If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you will know that my hair is fairly long – about bra strap length in the back, thick, wavy and very prone to frizz. Despite this, I try to limit my use of heated tools – no daily use of blow dryers, flat irons or curling wands. That isn’t to say that I never use them, I actually own several heated tools.

 

 

My hair in its natural state – taken varying summer humidity conditions so you can see how wavy / thick / unruly my hair is:

 

 

The first time I used the Straightening Brush I just used it the same way that I would brush my hair to see how my hair would react instead of taking the time and following the step by step instructions. As you can see in the photo below, it smoothed the frizz and turned my hair into smoother waves and much less frizz. I always get a bit of frizz around the top of my head no matter what, which can easily be controlled with a bit of anti-frizz hair goop.

I’ve mostly been using the Straightening Brush to tame frizz and smooth out my waves instead of straightening my hair as my hair is so thick that it looks weird fully straightened.

All in all, I think that the Straightening Brush works well for smoothing and taming frizz. Once I get my hair cut and more layers added in, I’ll try using it to fully straighten my hair – and will have a subsequent blog post.

The Ordinary 100% Plant Derived Squalane Review

Today I am reviewing the final product from my recent haul from The Ordinary – the 100% Plant Derived Squalane. Info in italics is taken from their website:

Squalane is a saturated and stable hydrocarbon that is found naturally in the skin. It has very high emollience, is an exceptional hydrator and can prevent ongoing loss of hydration that impairs dermal suppleness. Squalane is non-comedogenic and is suitable for use on all skin types. It can also be applied to hair to increase heat protection, add shine and reduce breakage potential.

In all honesty, this is the one product that I’ve used on my face the least. Not because I don’t like it, but my skin hasn’t been having issues with dryness since the weather has gotten warmer.

I have been using it on my hair though, since it has been feeling a little dry these days and it has been helping to hydrate my hair. I love multi-use products – I’ll probably use this one more in the colder months. But it is good to have on hand in case of sudden dryness.

This one costs $7.90 CAD.

The Ordinary Buffet Multi-Technology Peptide Serum Review

Today I have a review of the “Buffet” Peptide Serum from The Ordinary.

This formula combines a comprehensive array of studied technologies to target multiple signs of ageing at once. The technologies are Matrixyl 3,000 peptide complex (with palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7), Matrixyl Synthe’6 peptide complex (with palmitoyl tripeptide-38), Syn-Ake peptide complex (with dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate), Relistase peptide complex (with acetylarginyltryptophyl diphenylglycine), Argirelox peptide complex (with acetyl hexapeptide-8, pentapeptide-18), Probiotic complex (with lactococcus lactis lysate), in a base of 11 skin-friendly amino acids and multiple hyaluronic acid complexes. The total concentration of these technologies in the formula by weight is 25.1%.

This clear serum is to be used morning and night. The serum targets hydration, fine lines, wrinkles, dynamic lines and skin texture.

I’ve been using this for several weeks now both morning and night after washing my face, and feel that I can give a solid opinion on this serum. I find this to be a nice lightweight serum, and it layers nicely with other skincare products – other serums, moisturizers, primer, sunscreen, make-up etc.

I find that the Buffet serum is hydrating, and I’ve noticed an improvement in my fine lines and skin texture. And get this, the serum costs $14.80 – for an anti-aging serum! Most anti-aging serums tend to be way more expensive!

Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads

Today I have a little review of the sample sized Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads by Nip + Fab. I used my Ipsy GlamBag points to get this sample. This is my first time using anything from Nip + Fab.

Here’s what it says on the website:

Unveil younger-looking skin with our innovative Glycolic Fix. 60 radiance-boosting pads, soaked in exfoliating glycolic acid (2.8%) retexture + resurface skin whilst witch hazel helps to tone. This moisturising formula with hyaluronic acid + soothing blue daisy helps to reveal brighter + smoother looking skin.

I am always a little nervous when it comes to using exfoliating acid products since my skin is so sensitive. To be honest, I really was expecting a tingle or burn, but thankfully these exfoliating glycolic acid pads are gentle. My skin feels so smooth after using!

However, I do find that my skin feels a little sticky immediately after using them, but that feeling goes away after a little while. I think that the hyaluronic acid and blue daisy are what helps calm the skin and keep it from irritating the skin. Sadly, because it is a sample size (10 pads), I don’t have a verdict on  longer usage. I think that I will most likely purchase a full size of this one to try out for a longer period of time.

Rebels Refinery Capital Vices Skull Lip Balm

Today I have a review of a lip balm that I was gifted last year (thanks Stashy!), and I actually got a second one gifted to me for my birthday this year (thanks R)! I’ve been using the first one for several months now. Since I’m a lip balm addict, having a second one is awesome!

The Capital Vices Skull Lip Balm is made by Rebels Refinery, a Toronto-based company (yay Canada!).

The description in italics is taken from their website:

Function meets design with the Capital Vices Collection Skull Lip Balm. The highest quality coconut and sweet almond oils moisten, nourish and protect while Vitamin E provides essential antioxidants. The bottom of each balm is also embossed w/ the quotation: “Be all my sins remember’d”- Hamlet

Not only is the lip balm really cool looking in its skull shaped container, it is actually a really great lip balm! It is super moisturizing, and is crafted using natural and mostly organic ingredients (97% natural / 90% organic).

Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Beeswax (Cera Alba / Cire d’abeille), Canola Oil (Canola / Huile de colza), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Honey (Mel / Miel), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Limonene (mint contains peppermint oil) (passion fruit contains natural passion fruit flavoring)
